Facts and Information

Is it time for my loved one to move into a new home where they will have assistance 24 hours a day?

If your loved one is living alone and showing signs of confusion about what day or time it is, or if you are worried about their safety in a home alone, it is probably time for you to help them make a change. If they are not eating well and it is apparent that they cannot keep up with their medications, it is time that you insist they move into a home that can take care of them. There are many great sitting services available for seniors. If the funds are available to cover all the time needed that may be an option. This maybe step one before the actual move to a new community. Sometimes seniors resist this type of help, you may have to be a little “tricky” to make this work. There is nothing wrong with “tricking” someone into doing something that will keep them safe. Your parents probably did that for you as a child. Now you can offer that service back to them in love and care for their safety. Don’t let the senior “trick” you into believing that everything is Ok.

Should my loved one live in my home? Is it wrong to not take my loved one into my home?

First of all you have to think about your life style. Do you have the time to care for your loved one? Is your home a safe place for the senior, are there stairs, rugs that they can trip on? Cleaning products and medicines they could mistake for something else? You will need to address all these issues and many more in order to make a good decision. Also how long would it be appropriate for a senior to live in your home? Is your life style going to be changing soon and they would have to move again? It is not good to move seniors often, especially thouse with AD.

It is NOT wrong to NOT take your parents into your home. Matter of fact it can be WRONG for the parent. Many older adults would rather live away from family and feel independent. If your loved one can count on you to do the best you can do and make sure they have a safe, clean and happy environment to live in that is what needs to be done. Remember independence is very important to seniors. They have lived a long time making their own decisions and it is hard to let a grown child make decisions for you. Be respectful by allowing them to be as independent as possible for as long as possible.
